Steve’s Priorities


I'm running for City Council because I believe the First Ward will benefit from having a representative that has constructive working relationships with the Mayor, City Councilmembers and City Staff. Political coalitions and compromise are at the heart of good governance. We likely will not agree on everything, and where our interests diverge, I will stand up for the First Ward. But the reality is that there is little benefit to the First Ward as the minority on one 7-2 vote after another. My goal is to work with our fellow stakeholders, not against them.

We need to build a constructive and mutual relationship with Northwestern that recognizes we are partners and stakeholders in each other’s success. With the stadium deal now approved, we need to ensure that Northwestern operates in a way that addresses the concerns of our friends and neighbors that live nearby.

As the entire country attempts to solve the housing crisis, we have the ingredients to lead the way. It starts by updating our zoning to meet the moment. That will require a clear-eyed, rigorous assessment of the proposed changes to the City’s comprehensive plan and zoning code.

There is a broad consensus that we needed to preserve this historic mansion. Now that the City has engaged with a partner that has the capital to do that, we need to bring it to a satisfactory conclusion.
